Apartment Security – Why An Intercom System Can Be A Security Risk
You will know how convenient a intercom system is if you live in an apartment block.
They are great for when you get a call at your apartment by a visitor as you don’t need
to leave your apartment and go to the lobby to see who it is. Whether it’s a friend,
neighbor or delivery person they are no doubt extremely convenient. Simply press
the button to talk with your visitors and press another button to let them in. However,
they can pose as a security risk. Be aware that unauthorized people could gain entry
into your block and gain access into your apartment.
Don’t ever let people into your block unless you know exactly who they are. If you
are expecting a delivery that is fine but if it’s a stranger trying to get in to
talk to you don’t let them in. If you are having a house party then don’t just let
any guest in. Check each one first before you open the door. Its easy to be
lazy.
You would be surprised how people may give all sorts of excuses to try to let themselves
into your apartment. Be very wary and don’t let in anyone other than your visitors.
A person may pose as a delivery guy and make out they are trying to deliver to someone
who is not in. Or someone may claim they are a new tenant in the block and have
lost their keys. Don’t fall for the excuses and don’t let them in. Don’t take the
chance if it sounds too risky.
For your privacy you should never associate your name next to your apartment number
as this is a security risk. You need to persuade your landlord to remove any names
next to the number as any stranger can follow you home one night and find out where
you live and what your name is and use it for identity fraud.
Remember to point out to your landlord a broken or faulty intercom unit. Although
it is a convenience, it is also an important security device that enables you to
keep a safe distance away from your unwanted visitors.
