Window Security Locks
Burglars do not like to break windows. Breaking glass makes a noise which is very
distinctive. It is quite rare in fact to hear breaking glass that anyone in the
vicinity would most likely investigate. This draws too much unwanted attention to
the burglar. Also broken glass is not attractive for burglars to enter through.
It hampers their entrance and exit from the property. Also they do not want to risk
cutting themselves which could leave behind DNA, thus helping crime officers to
positively identify the intruder.
An intruder would prefer to enter through an open window. Often people leave windows
open so the burglar does not have to try too hard to break in. So many people do
this leaving themselves wide open for a burglary.
Some do however close and lock their windows, but how secure and solid are your
window security locks? Some are of poor quality and don’t pose any real problem
to the burglar and in fact many older windows are often fitted with latches and
not locks. These are also not very secure.
Good quality locks don’t have to be expensive. Shop around your local DIY store
and compare the window locks available. It will be money well spent for that piece
of mind and added security to your property.
There are some types of lock that are secured by a thumb turn on the inside. These
prevent the window being opened on the outside. But a burglar could still smash
a window and easily open the window by reaching in through the open glass and operating
the thumb turn lock. He can then open the window without having the climb in through
the broken glass.
The best and most secure type of lock for your window security are window locks
that lock with a key. When you go out remember to take the key out the lock so the
burglar can’t smash the window and open it. However the key must be kept close to
hand in case of an emergency and you need to get your family out of the property,
e.g. in a fire. Make sure all the family know the location of the window lock keys.
Window locks do give piece of mind that small children cant accidentally open them
and fall out.
Consider quality window locks that are visible from the outside allowing the burglar
to think twice when attempting the break into your property. Don’t make it easy
for the burglar, make them move on.
You may find it necessary to fit more than one security window lock to each window
depending on its size. Locks on larger windows will have more strain to resist if
the window is forced. Don’t underestimate burglars being able to get through small
windows. They can get though quite small windows and may even have a child accomplice
to climb in for them. Consider locks for all sizes of window.
Don’t neglect your upstairs windows as burglars may steal a ladder form you or your
neighbors property in climb in. Fit locks to all windows, upstairs and down. Fit
good quality, secure window locks to all windows in your property and force the
burglar to go elsewhere.
