Wireless CCTV Systems
Wireless CCTV systems have all the benefits of wired cameras but with the convenience
of quick and easy installation which can be carried by most DIY’ers. Wireless CCTV
systems are fairly straightforward to install and only needs minimal wiring. A wired
system should typically be left to a security professional whereas a wireless system
can be easily installed.
Some wireless CCTV systems can simply consist simply of just a camera and receiver
unit. The receiver plugs into your TV or computer and can receive signals from your
camera from up to 50 yards away. This is very cost effective and simple to operate.
You can easily expand this system by adding more cameras and have the flexibility
of moving cameras around, if necessary, with no need to change any wiring.
Wireless PIR detector cameras are also very popular. They would normally be in sleep
mode which will conserve their battery life. When these devices detect movement
they will wake up, switch on and become fully operational within a second or so.
This wireless technology is now widely considered to be as reliable as wired systems.
To summarize, the main benefits of a wireless CCTV system are:
- a lack of disruption (and potential damage) resulting from installing a hard-wired
alarm (e.g. drilling, removing floorboards, re-plastering etc.).
- quick and simple to install by a DIY’er thus avoiding the costs of hiring a professional
to do install the alarm.
- easily removed and re-installed for individuals such as tenants in rented accommodation
where landlords will not allow alterations.
- cameras can be placed almost anywhere as location is not dictated by wiring issues.
- easily added additional cameras. For example, if a property is extended or the level
of security needs changing.
Battery life can be an issue with wireless systems as they will need periodically
changing. However, many cameras can run in a sleep mode which conserves battery
life.
